Insta360 Mic Air launched!

Something that appears to have flown under the radar a little bit is the Insta360 Mic Air. This is a wireless mic system that connects to the Insta360 X5 without a receiver but can also be bought with a receiver that supports USB-C. Now I already have a cheap and cheerful Ulanzi J12 which has a great feature of allowing 2 mics to be connected at once for either stereo or 2 mono tracks and works well and was surprisingly cheap, but the Mic Air has some nice features and is priced well at either £49.99 for just the mic or £69.99 for the mic plus receiver kit (which is currently unavailable). I’d expect the list of cameras that support the mic air to grow, but older cameras *may* need the receiver to work properly….

In the context of a livestream, these mics can be used directly and easily in OBS etc. just by plugging in the receiver and selecting the appropriate mic (my Ulanzi works with a cheap USB-C to A adapter and shows up as USB Mic 1.0). The Mic Air has a charging cradle rather than the Ulanzis charging box, but comes with a pouch, and has a magnetic clip system rather than actual clips like the Ulanzi system. The real difference for me is the wind muff/dead cat system which actually mounts around the mic and the fact that when paired to the X5 the mic can be used to start/stop recordings. All in all it seems a decent system and is very small… a quick review/unboxing video is below
